For this comeback, Julien finds the Paris Opera with a world premiere of composer Michael Jarrell, adaptation of Bérénice de Racine, with director Claus Guth. It is also a first meeting with the musical director of the institution, Philippe Jordan. At the Opera Garnier from September 29!
This comeback is also marked by the release of his first solo album Che Alpha. A recital of French romantic operatic arias with the Orchester de l’Opéra de Lyon.

Don Ottavio at the Opéra de Lyon

Julien Behr’s season is closing as it was opening, with Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni)! For the season’s opening it was at the Opéra de Nancy directed by Jean-François Sivadier, this time it is at the Opéra de Lyon in a new staging by David Marton (conductor: Stefano Montanari).

Belcanto in Bordeaux

A few weeks ago Julien Behr managed to enter the Verdi-repertory as Fenton in Falstaff at the Flemish Opera with great success. Some press-cuts referring to this production:

And indeed Julien Behr’s upcoming first Belcanto-challenge concerns the demanding role of Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. The production will open at the Bordeaux Opera on April 3rd, 2018.

After Mozart getting back home with Gluck

Doubtlessly Julien Behr managed to establish himself as Mozart-tenor within the last few years. He appeared successfully from Bern via Paris to Minneapolis as Tamino (The magic flute) and even more recently as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) with the Cologne Opera and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. Two years after his debut with the opera-house of his hometown Lyon (Arbace in Idomeneo), Julien Behr is returning back there as Admète in Gluck’s Alceste. Gluck, the reformer of the French opera who was so influential on Mozart too.

Mozart again and forever

He concluded the last season making his debut as Admète in Gluck’s Alceste with the opera company of his hometown Lyon which he received excellent reviews for: „Admirable Julien Behr‘s soft and creamy timbre“ (, 05.05.17); „Julien Behr is an Admète in Gedda’s style, magnificent in every respect: youthful and chivalrous in both appearance and vocal performance“ (, 02.05.17): „Befittingly Julien Behr acts more as doubtful, desperate husband than as ruler in macho mode delivering his radiant, exquisitely focussed tenor-voice with perfect French style.“ (, 15.05.17)

For this seasons’s opening, Julien Behr gets back to one of his starring roles which he previously already performed at the Cologne Opera and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris: Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. With both his acting talent and his splendid arias he will conceivably take the audience in storm again, both at the Opéra national de Nancy and subsequently at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg. Falstaff at the Flanders Opera

Our Mozart-Tenor Julien Behr had already been eagerly waiting for his first offer concerning a Verdi-role. His wish is being fulfilled now with Fenton (Falstaff) at the Flanders Opera, certainly a part which will perfectly fit to him. Conductor: Tomáš Netopil, stage-director: Christoph Waltz. Opening-night in Antwerp on December 13, 2017.

Salome in Strasbourg

Although disposing of a very „Italian“ timbre (with a focused and colourful sound), Julien Behr has built up his international reputation with a „German“ role: Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) which he already performed in six different productions including the most recent one of the Paris Bastille Opera.

Julien right now returns back to the Opéra du Rhin making his role-debut in another part in German language: Narraboth, the unlucky admirer of Strauss’ Salome. Opening night on March 10, 2017.

A few months ago, the German magazine Der Opernfreund wrote about Julien Behr’s Don Ottavio at the Cologne Opera: “Julien Behr is convincing as Ottavio: A very young Mozart-tenor with superb timbre, the required piano-style and even committed acting ability which enables him to give profile to the usually sallow lover type”. It was his role-debut.

Julien Behr is now Don Ottavio again at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris.

A high profiled Don Ottavio in Cologne

A few weeks ago Julien Behr made his debut as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) at the Cologne Opera under the baton of François-Xavier Roth and was highly acclaimed for his performance. A summary of press cuts:

„With his beautiful timbre, his natural acting and his moving lyricism” (Concerti, 09.03.16), Julien Behr is „no whiny-voiced lover, but a gentleman full of powerful virility“ according to Der Neue Merker (06.03.16). Online Musik Magazin adds (07.03.16): „also in the pianissimo Julien Behr brings substantial voice. His Ottavio is virile and ready to fight against his counterpart Don Giovanni“. Der Opernfreund sums up (06.03.16): „Julien Behr is a convincing Ottavio: A young Mozart-tenor with superb timbre, the required piano style and even committed acting ability which enables him to give profile to the usually anaemic lover type”. Finally Klassikfavori (06.03.16): “With his breathtaking pianissimo, French tenor Julien Behr provided a crowning achievement with the aria Dalla sua pace“.

After making his debut with Tamino at the Opéra de Paris in 2015, Julien Behr demonstrated in Cologne once again his status as a world-class Mozartian tenor one needs to count on. Don Ottavio remains on his upcoming schedule with new productions at the Paris Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and at the Opéra de Lyon.

The last season ended with his successful debut at the Opéra de Paris (Tamino). The new season startet with an amazing concert performance of L’heure espagnole (Gonzalve) with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Charles Dutoit at the Victoria Hall in Geneva right before he made his debut with his first Belcanto role ever (Ernesto in Don Pasquale) at the Opéra de Rennes. Julien Behr is now performing Don Ottavio in a new production of Don Giovanni under the baton of François-Xavier Roth at the Cologne Opera. Opening night on March 5, 2016.

From Bastille to Garnier

In June he was Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) at the Opéra Bastille in a staging by Robert Carsen, in September he will be Mercure at the Opéra Garnier in the revival of Laurent Pelly’s famous production of Platée with Marc Minkowski conducting. Performances from September 7, 2015 on.
Julien Behr will subsequently be singing Gonzalve in L’heure espagnole with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under the baton of Charles Dutoit before getting back to Minneapolis as Tamino in the production by Barrie Kosky.

Tamino at the Opéra de Paris

In 2011 Julien Behr made his debut as Tamino at the Opéra de Rouen under the baton of Sébastien Rouland in a staging by William Kentridge. Meanwhile he has performed this role in St Gall, Bern, Bordeaux and Minneapolis (for his US-debut). He will soon perform this part, which suits him so well, in Paris in the revival of Robert Carsen’s production at the Opéra Bastille.

A world premiere at the Opéra national du Rhin

A few months ago, the critic Laurent Bury made following comment on “Julien Behr is the Mozart tenor that France has been awaiting.” Julien Behr will show us soon that he will be up to this praise when performing the role of Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) at the Opéra Bastille. Before this event, he will start the season at the Opéra national du Rhin by taking part in the world premiere of Quai Ouest by Régis Campo, an opera based on a play by Bernard-Marie Koltès. The premiere will be on 27 September 2014

From Tamino to Gonzalve, quite a full season

In this season, our tenor from Lyon interpreted Ferrando (Così fan tutte) at the Opéra national de Lorraine, Gonzalve (L’heure espagnole) at the Barbican Centre together with the symphony orchestra of the BBC, Camille de Coutançon (Die lustige Witwe) at the Opéra d’Avignon, Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) at the Opéra national de Bordeaux and Antinoüs (Pénélope by Gabriel Fauré) at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

Back to the Theater an der Wien

For Julien Behr, this season started with a recital of melodies by Verdi, Donizetti and Liszt at the Museum of Grenoble. At the moment, the young tenor from Lyon is once again guest at the Theater an der Wien where he will be performing Arbace (Idomeneo) under the baton of René Jacobs. It will not be a role debut as Julien Behr performed this role already in 2010 at the Mozartwoche in Salzburg, Marc Minkowski conducting. Opening night on November 13, 2013.

Perfect Paris debut

Julien Behr made a few days ago his Paris Debut in Reynaldo Hahn’s Ciboulette (Antonin) at the Opéra Comique, staged by Michel Fau under the baton of Laurence Equilbey. His performance was unanimously acclaimed by the critics.
